The iPad truly is a beautiful devious. On look at it and you will feel that we have jumped forward twenty years into the future. The iPad’s exteriors is a combination of aluminum and reinforced plastic. Like most Apple mobile devices, the iPad only has one button: the home bottom found on the bottom of the iPad when help in portrait. There is the usually audio jack for those who want to plug in headphones, and also a mic. The iPad speakers do their jobs, but they are not going to blow you away with their quality.

The iPad has the standard Apple external connector which is the only way you can hook up the iPad to other devious due to the lack of a flash drive. However, there are many devious that can connect to the iPad and more are being custom built for the iPad and should be coming out soon.

The iPad weighs 1.5 pounds. It is significantly lighter than a laptop, but much heavier than your average smart phone or mobile devious. You will begin to feel the exertion in your wrist after hold the iPad for about half an hour.

Display

The iPad display is truly something to see. It packs 1024×768 pixels in its screen which seems like a low number, but images are crisp nevertheless. The color and contrast on the iPad is really amazing. The iPad’s one Achilles’ heel is that in direct sunlight you will see a ton of reflection on the screen, and the screen which is back lit get hard to see. This is most notice able when videos with dark scenes.

Eye strain

The has been a lot of discussion about whether or not the iPad causes eye strain. Based on my own experience and the experiences of others who have tried the iPad, this is really a hit or miss thing. I do not get any eye strain from using the iPad even after spending an hour reading an eBook. However, if you plan on making the iPad your next eBook reader, I would advise you to go test out an iPad at the Apple store first.

Media Consumption

Media consumption was supposed to be the one thing that the iPad excelled at, and it does.

iBooks: iBooks is Apple’s eReader that can be downloaded free on the iPad. It comes with a free sample of Winnie the Pooh. iBooks gives the readers a lot of options such as changing the text size or the brightness of the screen. iBooks does not have a huge selections of books yet, but it offers books in full color and the touch screen ui makes it fun to read.

Kindle: Amazon has made a dedicated app on for the iPad which always Amazon customers to access their eBooks or buy more from the Amazon store. The Kindle has about 340,000 more eBooks than Apple’s own iBooks. You can now watch videos that are embedded in the eBooks.

Comics: I think that comics where made to be viewed on a tablet like device. The beautiful display of the iPad combined with the interactive touch screen makes reading a comic on the iPad almost more enjoyable than holding a physical copy in your hands. Marvel and DC Comics both have dedicated apps for the iPad where you can buy new releases. Japanese manga are slowly making their way to the iPad for those of you who are fans of manga.

Magazines: So far the magazines that have been released on the iPad have enjoyed huge success. Big names such as Time Magazine, GQ, and Wired have all made dictated apps for the iPad where you can download the latest edition. The magazine companies are really excited about the opportunities the iPad brings and are still experimenting with how they should deliver their content to their subscribers. The eMagazines still have a way to go with things such as ui and pricing, but you can expect them to get better with time.

Newspapers: The iPad is an ideal product for reading the latest news in the morning at the breakfast table or on a train on your way to work. USA Today, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and many more have already made their content assessable on the iPad.

Video

The iPad is an excellent device for looking at video’s. There are many options of where you can get videos from. Off course you have iTunes which has a huge selection of videos that you can buy and upload to your iPad. With a paid subscription you can also access Netflix on your iPad and stream movies and shows. For you quick videos you can always head over to YouTube and watch movie trails or a funny clip.

Music

The way you access the music is a little different from the iPhone, but it is still simple and easy. Apple has simple merged its iPod functions into iPad. One of the strong points of the iPad is that you can create your playlist directly on the iPad without having to use iTunes.

Keyboard

The iPad keyboard is much bigger than the iPhone or iPod Touch virtual keyboards, and the extra room makes it a breeze to type on. Don’t expect to be able to bang out a 10 page paper (although I’ve heard that it has been done) but for quick typing the iPad will get the job done.

Gaming

The gaming on the iPad is not for extreme gamers, but more so for the casual one. In fact, I’ve heard of dozens of people who haven’t played games in years finding a couple that they really enjoy on the iPad. The iPad offers all of the classic board games such as chess and scrabble and you can even play multiplayer. Then there are games that were designed specifically for the iPad. These games are clever, challenging, addictive, and loads of fun. And did I mention cheap? Most games are free and none get more expensive then about $5.00

The Nexus One is seen as an iPhone killer to many, many industry experts and mobile phone bloggers. Google sees the Nexus One one as the perfect way to take on the iPhone, something they craved since they released the Google Android operating system. In the following article we will see what the Google phone has to offer.

The Google Nexus One, is a handsome device which has a curved design boasting style. Not only is the Nexus a stylish phone, it is also slim and thin and will slot nicely into your trouser or jeans pocket.

Slim and trim is the name of the game with the Nexus One. To be exact in terms of measurements the handset is 11.5 mm x 59.8mm and 119mm. The Nexus One also feels great in your had, this can also be put down to the design, which has curved edges that are also tapered. The Google handset has 4 key buttons on the handset which look after the home, back, menu and search features.

The Google phone uses a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, that bring speed to the table. This has been used before on HTC handset – namely the HD2. In addition, the Nexus also comes with 512MB of RAM and ROM under the bonnet. This mobile phone’s display is touchscreen and is pretty big, coming in at 480 x 800. It also comes with a proximity sensor, a light sensor and one accelerometer. Furthermore, the Nexus One has a HSPA-capable GSM radio, WiFi, one micro SD slot and AGPS chip.

This mobile phone is one of the fastest going, but it is missing a number of hardware features that may leave Android fans a little ticked off. The missing features include multi-touch support, dual-mode capability for GSM and CDMA networks, and native tethering.

Mobile phone bloggers, gadget reviewers and industry experts seem to be really impressed with the display screen on this handset. The 3.7-inch display looks really good and seems to be one of the best which features Android OS. The resolution is quite high also, (480 x 800). One drawback of the AMOLED display is that it can come out a little Orange. Picture taking might bee a little poor, if you use this phone outside on a sunny day. The light settings will not help and your pictures will not be the best you have ever seen from a camera phone. On the other hand the Google Nexus One is not a camera phone and if you want a phone which is big on picture you might be better off with the Pixon 12 by Samsung.

The nice display and the super fast Snapdragon processor, will allows us to forgive the Google Nexus One for what it is lacking. While the enhanced voice capabilities of the Google phone contributes to the overall performance. All in all, even if this mobile phone has some features missing, however it is still a interesting addition to the cell phone market, thanks to the speed and the name behind the phone – Google. Only time will tell if this handset has what it takes. We need to take into account that this is Google’s first effort and history tells us that upgrades and improvements will be made on subsequent releases. Expect subtle changes to be made and a Nexus Two to be released within a year.

Apple have introduced the new iPhone 4 to their ever impressive range of products. This release, perhaps more so than any other, is vital with a host of mobile phone manufacturers producing very high specification phones. So is this new addition set to put the iPhone firmly back at the top of the tree?

Certainly in more recent years, the name Apple has become synonymous with the world renowned iPod. So it is only natural to expect the audio features to excel on the new iPhone 4. Working in much the same manner as the iPod Touch, the music features are great, and ignoring the host of others functions available this in its own right is a great music player. Thanks to the new high resolution “Retina” display that the handset boasts, cover art looks superb on the 3.5″ screen. There are two ways to search for the track that you want to hear. When held on its side, the interface looks superb with a carousel wheel featuring all of your albums on display. From there it is a matter of scrolling through and selecting the one you want. In its upright position the method is much more functional, with a range of options including, Artist, Genre and Song to choose from. A handy new feature on this model is the ability to add make your own playlists whilst on the move, rather than relying on the iTunes program to do so. The iPhone 4′s two storage options cater for all types of user, with most people finding the 16GB version more than sufficient to handle their collection. There is however the option of a 32GB model for those people who require that bit extra. You need never be let down by headphone quality as any pair can be used on the phone thanks to a 3.5mm stereo socket, freeing you from the restraints of using the manufacturers supplied pair.

Whilst on the subject of media features, it is only right to talk about the excellent High Definition video capture that the iPhone 4 offers. Keeping in line with the range of home televisions and camcorders now available, Apple have given the handset the capability of shooting footage at 30 frames per second in superb 720P HD quality. A new iMovies app is also available for download which allows you to perform basic editing feature with your film. You can even upload this straight to sites like YouTube thanks to the great internet connectivity that is on offer, which includes super fast WiFi. Still shots are great to, with the 5 mega pixel camera improving on the one found in the 3GS, with the added bonus of an LED flash, zoom and auto focus facility. A new second front facing camera is also included. Although this generally wont be used for taking standard photos, it is however essential should you want to take advantage of Apples excellent new video calling system, Facetime.

A wide array of other great features can be found on the iPhone 4 in addition to the brilliant multimedia functions. Throw into the mix a stylish new design which is the thinnest currently available and you have yourselves the best phone currently available anywhere.

With the iPhone news of the Apple launch, the number of iPhone hacks has increased exponentially and a great deal of energy has been put into working through the iPhone software to find where the passwords and the “glue” is for a number of apps. The “Holy Grail” at the moment is iPhone unlocking.

iPhone unlocking is in fact most requested hack, and unlocking means that the iPhone can be used on any network and not just AT&T’s. There have been a couple of claims to have managed this iPhone hack ultimate but so far it’s all just rumors though it seems that a couple are indeed getting close and have managed to gain ownership of the file system. Sieving through the iPhone software and especially the gif images that are embedded seems to be the number preoccupation of any self respecting iPhone hack merchant around the globe.

One writer at GigaOM claims that they have gotten all the iPhone functions working except the telephone, voicemail and text features. To be honest I don’t see the point in all of this, getting an iPhone hack to unlock the beast is not going to be of much use unless you use the iPhone overseas and on top of that you’ll have no 3G support.

Where I do see a value in getting the iPhone software opened up, is that once we have the iPhone unlocked then being able to use the device as an ultimately portable minicomputer working over a wifi network then we have something that’s going to be useful.

On the iPhone news grapevine, it’s not just iPhone hacks that are streaming in thick and fast, there are also a series of full-blown web apps which I have to say is pretty impressive – well done guys! Probably the best one at the moment is the iPhone hack “iChat for iPhone” which provides you with IM capability on AIM. More than that, the iPhone software source is available for this hack and you can host it on your own machine. If you are really serious about keeping up-to-date with the latest in iPhone unlocking and iPhone hacks then check out the iPhone Dev Wiki that seems to me to be the closest to getting an iPhone unlocking hack.

iPhone software that you can download onto your new iPhone can be found at iPhone Applications on the web. Here you’ll find all iPhone software and applications such as iWeather and more games than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately, until we get iPhone hack that will open up the iPhone to third party applications we are going to have to make do with Apple iPhone software that we’re allowed to play with at the moment.

How long before we have an iPhone hack that will help us unlock the iPhone completely is like asking how long is a piece of string, but with the energy that is being devoted to it, I guess it could be any day now.

The popularity of GPS is already taking its spot in the global arena. The GPS tracking system is a new technological work of art that enables cell phones “global positioning system” tracking. However, GSP are not only applied into cell phones for we have already GPS watches today. It is interesting to know how this technology can work particularly if you are to deal with aged people’s and little kids’ security.

GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System which utilizes satellite connections to track something. The satellites interact with the GSP receivers and then receivers transmit information containing the user’s location, his speed and distance and all it takes from the connectivity is the GPS watches that supports the technology. These high-tech watches are already available in the market but inquire first about this thing before taking it home for use.

Today, there are watches manufactured with amazing features like built-in cameras, internet access, and a whole range of features, but the most essential aspect of watches GPS powered is their ability to track locations. For parents who like to keep safety for their kids, GPS powered watches can play a vital role in keeping in touch with their kids, particularly if they are working far from home. As long as their kids wear their GPS powered watches, they will always know where they are. However, some parents do not agree using these watches for they don’t like to invade the privacy of their kids but to some who just want to secure their little ones, they are really important.

These watches for kids are produced along a digital map and will work using an internet access. These GPS powered watches look like ordinary watches, just a little bulkier with traditional types. These watches can be locked on if users are small children who are not really knowledgeable about their watches. The design and level of technology brought about by the applications offer worthy investment.

It is essential to realize that in case of emergency, GPS watches can really be a life saver. Having the GPS system is not for free because there will be monthly charges for the system. This huge improvement in GPS technology allows GPS watches receivers to become smaller and unnoticeable. It doesn’t matter which brand or model you have, the comfort will depend on the idea that locating a child or somebody is just a few strokes away. The GPS powered watches can actually make a great difference to a matter of life and death situation.

Do you really want to build an iPhone app?

This might sound like a daft question at first. But I want to make sure that you have fully explored your target audience and considered whether it would be more suitable to launch an app on the Blackberry or Android platform.

If you have your mind set on an iPhone app, then I urge you to also consider what happens when it is a success? Yes, I am assuming that your iPhone application will be a success because they are growing so rapidly. Will the agency you use be able to launch a similar app on the other platforms so as not to alienate consumers? Will you choose to combine your iPhone app with perhaps a mobile website that would allow all other smartphone users to access your content?

Search out the iPhone apps you like!

I have managed many website and iPhone application projects and one of the mistakes I regularly come across is managers that are too reliant on the designers. I suggest that as part of your initial brief you really look into all the different types of iPhone apps that are within your market. If there are no iPhone apps then simply look at what you like. Consider why one flows better than another, what elements frustrate you and what ideas could you use to build your iPhone app.

Understanding Apple Connect for your iPhone Application

Apple Connect is a website used by your iPhone application developer. It is basically a website that holds the details of your app and is used to send your iPhone app binary code to Apple for them to approve… if you are lucky (I’ll get to that in a moment)

It is also the place where everything you see on iTunes is managed. So those screen shots you see for each app, you guessed it, they are uploaded through connect. You may want to go through connect with your iPhone app developer just to get used to what you can and cannot do.

Pricing your iPhone Application

Apple operates a tiered pricing structure so all you have to do is select a pricing tier from 1-10 to set your price around the world i.e if it is 59p in the UK then it will automatically be 99 cents in the US. Again, you can access this with your iPhone developer by visiting Apple Connect.

Planning your iPhone app layout

Bespoke apps will be much less expensive if you do the ground work. By this I mean work out exactly what you want and create a ‘work flow’ diagram. Basically start with a blank picture of an iPhone and sketch in your iPhone app splash screen and homepage. Work out what buttons will go along the bottom of your iPhone app to create the menu – you can have five buttons.

Next, using lots of blank iPhone images, create a hierarchical structure of your iPhone application. By doing this, you can literally show your designer how you want it all to work i.e. click here and it shows this screen or searches this item. Don’t worry too much about whether it is technically possible as your iPhone app designer will undoubtedly suggest some options for improvement. Once the iPhone app workflow is complete then you and your designer know exactly how the app should work.

Bespoke iPhone Apps V’s Online App Builders

Only about 12 months ago, if you wanted to build an iPhone app then you had to look for a bespoke answer. Today things are rapidly changing and there are a number of US based companies and one UK company offering a build your app online service.

The fundamental difference between bespoke iPhone application development and online app builders is cost and flexibility. So it all comes down to ‘what do you want your iPhone app to do?’ and how much do you want to pay?

With bespoke iPhone applications you really can create just about anything and there are companies or individuals very skilled in this area. So ask yourself what you are trying to achieve. Is it brand building through clever entertainment or are you trying to get content to your customers in order to a) interact with them and build your brand or b) help them through to the final purchase of your product or service?

Think back a few years to the use of flash in website design. I was lucky enough to be part of a website pitch to Disney and guess what; we went over the top with flash. Incidentally we won the contract, however soon there were full flash websites everywhere. Today it is very much a different story, for most websites the number one objective is to get content across quickly and efficiently and in a manner that customers are used to, so for example, having the menu on the top or the left hand side of your webpage. Flash is now used predominantly in other areas to add to the overall user experience.

So for what might be classed as ‘utility iPhone apps’ stick to the rules and always think about the content you are trying to deliver.

Online iPhone App Builder

The main thing that you need to consider when using an online app builder is will it deliver what your customer needs? Can an online iPhone app builder offer your customer everything that they require without you having to spend anywhere between £3000 and £20000 plus, building a bespoke iPhone application!

Most online app builders allow you try them for free for either a set time or until you publish your app.

iPhone App Download Restraints

Your iPhone application needs to be less than 10mb’s if you want users to be able to download it from their phone via a standard connection i.e. not wi-fi.

If you are developing an iPhone game application of sorts then you are likely to go over this limit, however for an iPhone business application, then ideally try to keep it under 10mb’s

iPhone Content

If you read only one piece of text in this whole document, make sure you read this next part which looks at iPhone app content and the importance it has in getting your iPhone application signed off by Apple.

When you set about building your iPhone application the first thing you need to realise is that content is vital. Let’s take entertainment and games out of the equation for a moment because by their very nature they are highly likely to get signed off. So let’s concentrate on building a utility or business iPhone application.

Whatever you do, don’t build it just because everyone else is. Build it with your customer in mind. Do your customers already view your products online, are they interested in your news, do they visit your website to access content that is not available elsewhere, can you help your customers with a problem, do you want to find out what your customers think? These are just some of the questions you should consider when building your iPhone application.

Like any marketing or communication tool…building an iPhone application only works as an entertainment gimmick on rare occasions. For 99% of us, it has to serve a real purpose.

What we do know however is that your customers want information, news, products or promotions in the palm of their hand and with an iPhone app you have the perfect marketing tool from them to access your content and interact with your company.

The Cost to build an iPhone Application

A bespoke app can cost anywhere from £3000 to £20000 upwards. The price of bespoke iPhone application development is decreasing as more and more as iPhone application developers enter the market.

Building an iPhone app online costs anywhere from between $10 -$100 per month rental in the US an around £45 per month in the UK.

Submitting your iPhone App

When your iPhone app is submitted to Apple for approval you can expect to hear whether it has been approved or rejected after 1 or 2 weeks. If it has been rejected than Apple will give you some indication as to what needs to be improved before you can submit your app again.

You will have to work with your developer to asses and fix the problem.

I hope that you find some of the information useful and good luck.

You have probably said and heard others say a thousand times “there’s nothing good on TV right now!” It always seems that when you have free time to relax and veg out in front of the TV there is never anything on that you want to watch, and then when there is something on that you want to watch you are probably too busy to stop and watch TV. It can be frustrating and leave you wondering why you pay for TV service if you can’t enjoy it when you want. Well, before you run off and cancel your cable or satellite TV service consider using the On Demand channel the next time you are searching for something interesting on TV.

The great thing about the On Demand channel is that it gives you even more options of different things to watch than if you turned your television on during primetime hours. First you have the option of watching television programs. There are many networks that participate in the On Demand channel and offer their programs to watch for free. Once you select a program it will be in your menu of selected programs for 24 hours. If for some reason you are unable to finish watching something you can simply go back to it within the 24 hour period and find it waiting in the exact same spot for you. This is a great option if you haven’t invested in a DVR but you don’t always have time to catch your favorite TV shows or movies. Like with DVR you can play, pause, rewind, and fast forward a program that you are watching On Demand.

The other popular option with On Demand is the movie selections. There is a huge list of movies that are available to you for free. You can choose any movie from this list and instantly watch it through the On Demand channel. If there is nothing that you want to see in the free section you always have the option to buy something from the pay per view menu. This works in the same way as the free programs. It will be available for you for 24 hours. You can get the most of your money and watch the program yourself and then leave it for the other members of your household to watch. As long as it falls within the 24 hour period, you can watch it as much as you would like. It’s much easier and more convenient to rent through pay per view than to trudge down to the video store and pick something from there. And the selection with On Demand is just as good as your video store, if not better. You know they will never run out of something when you are buying it digitally!

The On Demand channel is a great way to get the most of out your satellite TV service. Whether you are looking for sports, high definition programming, movies, or TV shows, On Demand with satellite TV is the way to go.
